Two proteases, ß- and ?-secretase, are responsible for the endoproteolysis of amyloid precursor protein (APP) to form Aß peptide. There are two homologs of BACE (ß-site APP Cleaving Enzyme), BACE1 (Asp2; Memapsin2) and BACE2 (Asp1). Accumulation of Aß peptide creates amyloid plaques which progressively develop in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). | |
